It took me about two weeks to knit another pair of Crazy Monkey socks. (Have I ever mentioned that I really just knit the same toe-up sock pattern over and over? I use this toe, a slip stitch heel, and substitute in a stitch pattern.)
I dyed the yarn last fall, attempting to emulate the STR Raven Clan series. The base yarn is Gems Merino fingering (from a cone), dyed with Country Classics Raven and Deep Purple, then overdyed with Raven. This is probably my favorite of all the yarn I’ve ever dyed. The yarn felt like sproingy sueded silk as I was knitting. Ahhh…
In honor of this intersection between pattern and colorway, I’ve named these socks my Crazy Crows. Alas, the color is nigh impossible to photograph, either appearing too purple or not purple enough.
I think the picture below actually shows the colorway the best.
*sniff sniff sniff* -Mayhem
“Nope, you are so right, big kitty. These are not real crows. They aren’t birds at all! Talk about false advertising.” -Mayhem
Hmm, either your feet grew or May shrunk?
Despite the purple, it looks great!
Very pretty!
They look great Chris!
May, how would you have any idea what a real crow was? Love the color, Chris!!
Very pretty!
May, don’t listen to the big kitty. Big brothers are always up to no good.
Head butts and face rubs,

Oh, and tell your Mom that my mom really, really likes that colour. Of the socks.
Gorgeous! I bet they’ll see a lot of use, too — what a great colorway you designed.
That color is stunning – you did great! (I love the Gems base, too!)
(((hugs)))
ooh, love those!
I think I need to get some black dye…
may is sharp
That’s an unusual combination for you! (Snort.) Seriously though it does look great. Yum.
Not the “caw, caw” crows perhaps, but a rilly fine imitation of life! I love this color. And when will it become available?
Chris- A big improvement on the Raven Series, if you ask me. I’m going to overdye some sapphire blue with some black-
…and I can see where black would be a big influence in your life. Too bad cats don’t come in purple.
Impossible to tell what the color looks like in the photos, but I’m guessing that I’d like it. :o)
Humor is wasted on cats.
So do you have an Etsy shop to sell these, or are they just for your own use? (or for Mayhem to love on?)
Too bad we can’t actually SEE the socks. Ahem.
I think the color of the kitty made the color of the socks show up better. Thanks May.
I really like that color and the pattern. Nice work!
That is so gorgeous, color and pattern!
They are *YOU*! I love the color!
Wonderful dye job; the socks look great! I don’t think May would like an encounter with a real crow, first because it would steal all her brightly colored kitty toys.
I think Lorraine is right that it is too bad there are no purple cats.
Oooh, I love the way those turned out! They look great.
Mayhem, I’m pretty sure that a real crow would be big and scary! Stick to terrifying the socks into submission…it’s waaaaay more fun!!
I’m in love!
Even in the pictures, the yarn looks very nice – I can tell how silky smooth it is.
Beautiful socks – I think the color is amazing.
Tell May that not only is it false advertising, but – as my mother used to say – “false misrepresentation” … yep, she really thought that was a good one!
Lovely socks! I really like the colours.
Love the socks.
I wonder if you can overdye a black cat and make him/her purple? Wanna try? 🙂
The crazy monkey socks look good! Aren’t most socks variations on the cuff and standard heel/foot? Nice purply color you managed too.
Oh nice socks! Love the color. I always have trouble getting a good photo of anything purple.
May they’re not even stripey socks.
🙂 black kitty helps so the real colors of the yarn. Smart thinking there, posing that kitty in the shot. 😉
Great socks/yarn/color!
I absolutely lurve the purple socks!!!
Absolutely stunning color! You did a great job. Did you kettle dye it?
oh my – that yarn is stunning! what a fabulous dyeing job!
Oh, I love these! (Sorry so late … just catching up on some blog reading!)
