Stash addition

…bike stash addition, that is! On Saturday, I bought a 2008 Specialized Sequoia, which is an entry-level road bike. Initially, I thought I’d get a women specific bicycle (WSB), because the top tube on my 1994 manbike (Specialized Crossroads hybrid) was a bit too long (i.e., slightly too much distance between the seat and the handlebars) for me. Alas, during my WSB test rides, I discovered that my toes got in the way of the front wheel when turning. Ok, forget that idea and go back to the manbikes, eh? The Sequoia is very comfortable, plus it isn’t pink or baby blue or covered with butterflies. 🙂

Since my battered old hybrid isn’t very tempting to thieves, I have it tucked into the mass bike storage area (under a stairwell) in my building. However, that wasn’t going to work for the Sequoia, so yesterday I made a slight modification to one of the walls in my living room. Really, who needs paintings on the wall?! 😉 The Sequoia is displayed on a Delta Monet Wall Mount Storage Rack, which was pretty easy to install – even for my extremely unhandy self. (Why, oh why, were the wall studs not handily located in the center of that wall?! Mental note: Watch out for bike tire upon entering living room… ouch!)

“Hmm. I find myself at a bit of a loss as to what I should do next.” -Chaos

(I am definitely going to put some stuff on top of that bookshelf to discourage cats from playing with the bike!)

  1. Cool bike! Great choice! Heh, I was thinking exactly that when I saw it hanging there – I know I would have face-planted myself into the wheel a few times before I got the message!

Luckily, the guys don’t see overly interested in my bike. Probably because there are no hangy things…

  2. I’ve been eyeing up a super-cute orange beach cruiser type bike online for about a month.. though I have NO clue where I’d ride it. Those curious kitties of yours are going to be hanging from the ceiling on that bike if you don’t watch out.. lol.

  3. Nice – my good bike was stolen a few years ago and I got a Trek at a garage sale, so I don’t worry about it too much. That new one deserves a nice safe spot for your new cat toy.

  4. On behalf of kitties everywhere, and especially Chaos and May, may I present the case that sitting on top of the bookcase and spinning that front wheel is exactly the kind of exercise that kitties love. In fact, you should probably install a little shelf on the wall at the height of the back wheel so the two black beauties can spin together.

Truly, what is a bike in storage but a giant cat toy?

  5. Very cool bike! And lovely as wall decoration too!
Have the cats tried batting at the front wheel yet (to make it spin)? Or have they remained at a respectful distance?

  6. What a fascinating decorative addition to your place! Has anyone made a flying leap to the seat yet?
    lol
I have to admit that I pine for the days of old fashioned “coaster bikes” the only kind I ever liked!
    (sigh)
    (but yours is really cool!)
    (((hugs)))

  7. If you flip the bike, to hang front tire towards the living room entrance, does that let it clear? It would also present the back tire to the kitties, which doesn’t spin so freely.

My banged up Raliegh (survivor of two rather knarly bike accidents) still gets the once-over at bike racks…maybe people are just amazed such a beat up bike can keep going?

  8. A “friend of a friend” mounted his old motorcycle on their living room wall. Or at least, most of it – I don’t think it was the entire bike. But that was meant as art.

  9. Yikes! The kitty looks a little too interested in the whole set up. Of course neither of your angels would jump up there or otherwise knock it down… at least not until you’re sound asleep some night.

My friend, Penny, is holding a contest over at her blog. Go check it out and win some yarn! Cheers!

  10. Chris- What with the “Green” thing and lessening the eco carbon footprint. I would say having a bike on your wall as installation art may be the way of the future.

    You’re the original pioneer, Chris.

  11. looks great! I have been in the market for a new bike. gave both my mtn and road bike away to a good friend when we moved off island. (stupid me!) I had paid SO much $$ for them and special ordered them cause my legs are so short, lol. I do picture kittys sitting and spinning that front wheel for fun!

  12. what lovely new art you have my dear!
    seriously cool 🙂
and Chaos looks like he’s about to reach up and spin the front wheel (you know, once they figure out it spins, they never stop)
and way to go on the installation of that bike bracket!

  13. Great bike! I agree on discouraging kitty interest; nothing good could come from that. Although I can’t help thinking about the chaos and mayhem that would ensue were you to hang some of those sparkly streamers from your handlebars.

  14. Well as someone who is owned by two cats and a dog, I don’t think that putting anythng on top of the shelf will discourage them. My Nora would just knock it off on to the floor and then leap up on the seat.

  15. Pretty bike! I got a Specialized Dolce Comp a couple of months ago and it is pretty, too. Isn’t it great to ride a really lightweight bike? Made me realize that I didn’t suck, but my former bike did! I know what you mean about the pink and butterfly WSB’s. I upgraded to the comp because I couldn’t stand the pink on the Dolce Elites (the comp is a satisfying RED!). Happy trails!

  16. Chaos looks like he’s trying to figure out how to ride that bike. 🙂 Cool bike! If anyone asks, just tell them it’s bike art.

  17. I cannot believe you have bought yourself another bike and Chaos doesn’t even have ONE. Poor kitty.

I love the bemused look on his face. Similar to Hezekiah’s expression at the new floorlamp.

  18. I see Chaos on that bike a la the Wizard of Oz (what was that crabby neighbor-lady’s name?)

Seriously? Butterflies? I always want a snazzy red bike, myself.
