In which Chaos goes to the vet

So what are the major differences between Shelfari, GoodReads, and LibraryThing? I have accounts on all of them, but if I’m going to do a “book thing” like that, I need to pick just one.

This lolcat pic gets me giggling every time. This one leaves me feeling vaguely guilty, even though I’ve never tried washing either cat. Of course, since I took Chaos to the vet last night for his shots… (Click the picture below for a close-up of feline suspicion.)

“Hmm… Mom is acting awfully weird. Something’s up.” -Chaos

His suspicions were confirmed when I put on his collar.

“No good can come of this collar business. I’ll just tell you right now that I don’t approve of whatever you have in mind, Mom.” -Chaos

“Woe! I thought this was a kitty bed!” -Chaos

Chaos’s distressed caterwauling attracted the attention of PJ, the new counter kitten at the vet – he had to hop down and see what was wrong. Chaos growled at him for his troubles… but I don’t think PJ’s holding a grudge (in fact, I’m not sure PJ has more than two or three brain cells, but he sure is cute!).

“I knew no good could come of her putting that collar on me. Sometimes it sucks to always be right.” -Chaos

“Vengeance WILL be mine. Remember that, Mom.” -Chaos

  1. I just love that first picture of him! How did he do?

Chaos has a spiffy collar?? The Little Dudes are jealous. Oh, if I tried to put a collar on Atticus…

  2. I also have the same question re: Shelfari/GoodReads/LibraryThing. I used LT last weekend to finally list all my knitting books and then imported them to Ravelry, so it was good for that, but I noticed the website is slow.

Hope Chaos got a clean bill of health!

  3. Poor Chaos! I hope he at least got a clean bill of health. I haven’t done any of the online reading organization things — I’ll have to check back and see what people say. Honestly, I think that I’d rather pick up another book and start reading right away rather than logging on to the computer, etc.

  4. I’m a LibraryThing addict – easy to use, unexpensive, responsive owner, and so on. Nice mix of keeping the focus on books but alos adding some social features.

I’ve seen some negative things about Shelfari’s practices; you might want to Google them before using…..

How many stitches (either the medical variety or the knitting kind of zen……) did you need after the vet visit? I’m the caretaker of a 19yo cat who has the enviable (???)record of having bitten/scratched vets in 5 states and 1 Canadian province.

  5. When I took Alfie to the vet last month it was two weeks before he would let me anywhere near him. After yesterday, when we literally had to hunt him down and corner him in the basement to get him back there for neutering, he may never speak to me again.

  6. Chaos, you silly thing, visits to the vet are the *best.* The vet loves me! Rubs my tummy! Scratches my ears! Talks to me in a sweet voice! And gives me treats!!!
    Love, Gracie

  7. There MUST be a conspiracy going around, b/c our mom dragged us to the vet last week! I don’t know what she did with Danger, but she put him back in the kitty carrier this morning, leaving me home all alone with no one to cuddle with… but I’m glad it wasn’t me stuck in that carrier! -Cosmo

  8. I love those two LOLcats pics.

Chaos is a trooper, though he does look kind of wary in those pics. LOL!

I’ve only ever heard of Goodreads, and since I’m on it, I think you should pick it over the other two. 😉

  9. Poor Chaos! I’m afraid of needles too 🙂

I use librarything, only cos they’re going to integrate it into Ravelry sometime… I only use it for my knitting books though.

  10. Poor Chaos!! I LOVE his expressions, SOO ticked off at you!! LOL And what was Mayhem doing during all of this??

AND OMG that counter cat is ADORABLE!!!! Kittens are the reason I have so many cats!! Somehow babies never had the same effect. THANK GOD!

  11. Great lolcats 😉 Pogo still hasn’t forgiven us for bating her, not to mention posting the video on Youtube 😉 Office cats are great, always so friendly and empathic!

  12. That lolcat reminds me of going to the pediatrician and talking to the assistant about how hard it must be to give babies shots every day. Then she goes “And they’re so trusting” (stab!) it was very strange.

  13. Chaos, did you get her back yet? My momma is threatening to take me to the vet because I am scooting my butt across the carpet! Silly momma, I don’t need to go to the vet.
    licks,
    Raven

  14. When I was a kid we had one cat that required welding gloves whenever he went to the vet and usually had to be drugged. So he’d lie there licking his nose instead of trying to amputate someone’s hand.
Another always knew when my mom was taking him and got someone else to let him outside and wouldn’t come back until well after the vet closed for the day.

  15. Ohhh poor kitty. Django is always suspicious of his collar too, because he thinks we may force him to go outside in the elements. He’s such a whimpy dog now that he lives the good life.

  16. I don’t know, Chris, but I think I’d be VERY afraid – the look you’re getting in that last shot? You know the phrase, “if looks could kill?”
    Hon, you’d be a goner a thousand times over…
(ask me how I know that look?)
    lolol
    ((((hugs))))

  17. Darn! I’ve now been reminded during office hours that I have to make a vet appointment for both Chester AND Tyger. I’m sure they’ll want Chester on a diet, too.

Chaos is being so good in those photos! Mine try to run for it or refuse to come out of the carrier altogether.

  18. If it makes Chaos feel any better you can remind him that Nobody likes shots; not even people.

I don’t know how you left that vet without PJ the counter cat…..I’d have stuffed him in my purse for sure!

  19. Believe it or not, I bathe our cat; combination of an old house with an old-house-limestone-unfinished basement leading to dirty paws and face (and my cat is NOT black! At least not originally!) and studies that show that weekly cat bathing reduces allergy symptoms (at least two of us have mild allergies; not that it actually happens weekly). I’ll have to post a pitiful cat in bathtub picture sometime; he does look pathetic and skinny. (That’s why May likes the sink — she’s never been subjected to the business end of the sink! We’ve previously bathed Citrus in the sink and it freaks him out now, the sprayer did him in, I think; or his kitten reaction to flea stuff, long story. Bathtub works much better for him if not for my back.)

  20. Poor, poor Chaos. At least Jeanne left him (and May) a tasty treat.

Wow, I had not heard anything like that about Shelfari. Scary. I think I’m going to unjoin them.

  21. Poor Chaos!

We have a cat that constantly complains loudly in the cage, while driving to the vet. But it’s better than another cat who used to defecate. Yeah. Too bad most vets don’t do house calls for cats.

  22. Let me know what you figure out about all of these services. I signed up for Library Thing first, but I like free services, myself. So then I signed up for Shelfari, which is of course, free, so it suits my needs, but I haven’t done too much with it. I spent one day putting in all my books from one bookshelf, but have yet to tackle the large book case, that one will take awhile.

  23. Hee hee! I love that you took your camera to the vet and got pictures of not only Chaos, but PJ the counter kitty as well!

I like the look and feel of LibraryThing better. True, it’s not free (past a certain library size anyway) but their lifetime membership seemed worth it, so now it’s as good as free for me. I figure I pay for the flickr service, why not LibraryThing?
