And now… more socks!

I wasn’t particularly tempted by this month’s Sockamania pattern until I saw Limedragon’s gorgeous socks last week… then I cast on within a few hours! I used Noro Silk Garden Lite. As per usual, it was a toss-up whether the gorgeous colors of the Noro were worth suffering through the atrocious quality control – besides the usual twigs and other vegetative matter spun into the yarn, there was a colorway breaking knot in one of the skeins. See the abrupt change from yellow to orange near the top of the leftmost sock?!??? Grrrrr….

Oh well, it’s not like anyone’s going to see the top of the socks anyway – these are warm and will be great for inside my Birkie clogs on cold days at work this winter.

“This is my new cat bed, and you’d better not forget it! That includes you, Mom.” -Mayhem

  1. Apparently the cats share your thoughts on how warm the socks will be.. unfortunately you may never get the socks on your feet without being sat on by a cat.

  2. Noro…you never know what you’re gonna get… Drives me crazy!!! They look fabulous! And they will be warm too.

I have to go sensible shoe shopping soon…Birkie clogs, huh?

  3. I love Noro’s colors and your socks look great but I get really sick of the little knots and twigs. What are they doing? Standing in the middle of a field winding the yarn?

  4. lookin’ good! just started on a pair of garden silk lite myself. so far there’s only been a few twigs here and there and no yarn breakage…yet. fingers crossed!

  5. I love the socks! I wouldn’t have thought to use Noro Silk Garden for socks. They look great. Apparently May thinks they’ll make a nice warm kitty bed too.

  6. I was hoping to find some Silk Garden Lite at Rhinebeck to knit myself a pair of socks like yours or Lolly’s, because I just love how they look!

  7. Chris- You’re right- with Noro it’s all about the color- you have to overlook the knots and imperfections.

They do have an amazing range of colors- they’ll look fab with the Birks.
(How can you tell a hard-core knitter? More than one pair of Birks in the closet. I think I’ll try Mephisto’s next)

  8. The colors are beautiful! I made a sweater out of standard Silk Garden once and although the colors in it were fabulous the quality of the yarn itself was disappointing. Hopefully the lite contains less vm and is more consistent.

  9. Excellent cheerful socks for a cold winter day. I really need to work for a company that will allow me to wear colorful socks with Birk clogs.

  10. Only a clever knitter like you would think of using Noro SGL for socks. Perfect choice, too, wool for warmth and silk for strength. They look absolutely great. Re: Noro. As you told me, we cut them a lot of slack.

  11. WHAT is it about cats and finished yarn products? Or even unfinished yarn products. If I leave my knitting over the back of the couch or on the table, there is a cat ensconced on it immediately.

V and mamatulip need to check out The Harlot’s blog. There have been socks of amazing proportions showing up there in her First Sock photos. They would definitely encompass May!

  12. It’s bad enough when there are breaks in yarn, but when there’s a break in a patterning yarn it makes me CRAZY!

I’m beginning to think that Mayhem may have a foot fetish (or at least a sock fetish) 🙂

  13. I wouldn’t have noticed, had you not pointed it out. This is one of the reasons I have decided to avoid buying Noro. i love it, but I get sick of all the knots!

  14. May sure did tell you! Best of luck wearing your socks. I agree with Margene, maybe it’s time for the kids to get a formal cat bed (although if Chaos and May are anything like my girls, they still won’t use it, and will continue to use your socks…).

  15. I knitted with Noro once and will never be tempted to again!
Is it time Miss Mayhem the Kitty Super Model got a kitty bed or blanket knitted with all the left-over sock yarn?

  16. Love them Chris, but then again…who truly does not love Noro! Was hard to see in the pic but are they felted? Our stalker stray kitty is happy, she has had her frontage flea control and has been cleared to re-enter the house…much to my doggy’s dismay!)

  17. Very pretty. You know, when I first started back to knitting after many years away, Noro was one of the first yarns I used. I was charmed by the stray bits of vegetable matter, in a hey look yarn from real sheep sort of way. But I got over that. The color breaking knots, not so much.

  18. I love your and Limedragon’s socks – it’s a really nice pattern. I really want some Silk Garden Lite but I don’t think I’ve found any (or at least any good colors).

  19. Those socks are gorgeous. I wouldn’t have noticed the abrupt color break if you hadn’t pointed it out. It really doesn’t look that bad.
Hm, I never thought of using Noro for socks. Neato.

  20. heh heh – I agree with Margene.. I suspect Mayhem wants a real kitty bed (grin)
great socks. and as always with Noro, it’s full of surprises.
