Trying to catch up

I took a bit of a computer break over the holiday weekend and am frightfully behind in bloglines. Please let me know if you’re having a contest you’d like me to mention, as I’ll probably read about it on your blog long after the deadline has passed… Thanks!

Reading Update
The Harlequin: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel by Laurell K. Hamilton. Wow, there was actually a wee bit of a plot mixed in with all of the sex. I was pleasantly surprised by that, but disappointed that the entire book only covered maybe 24 hours – it could take years to get to next week at this rate! At least Edward was in the book – he’s one of my favorite characters.
Aunt Dimity’s Death, Aunt Dimity and the Duke, Aunt Dimity’s Good Deed, and Aunt Dimity Digs In by Nancy Atherton. Apologies to whoever recommended these to me – I am obviously much enjoying these lovely British mysteries about the amazing Aunt Dimity, ghost.
Tilt-A-Whirl by Chris Grabenstein. This mystery is set in a seaside New Jersey town, told from the perspective of a part-time summer cop. This was a well-written and engrossing read and I’ll be interested in seeing where this series goes next (the next books are already in my library list).
Damsels in Distress by Joan Hess. I’ve never really gotten into Hess’ Maggody mystery series, but I do enjoy the Claire Malloy mysteries. The latest features shenanigans amongst the members of ARSE (Association for Renaissance Scholarship and Enlightenment) at a RenFest.
Knit Two Together by Connie Lane. When Libby inherits a rundown yarn shop from her estranged mother, it changes her life. Definitely formulaic, but since it’s a Harlequin, I was fully prepared for that.
Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception by Lois Winston. Another formulaic romance, but I enjoyed it anyway. Come on, it has a picture of coffee on the cover (and it was $0.70 at the thrift shop).

Viewing Update
Bridget Jones’s Diary. Of course I had to watch this after watching Pride and Prejudice recently! My favorite P&P allusion was when Bridget was listing Mark Darcy’s faults and one of them was the length of his sideburns. Hee hee.
Love Actually. A very sweet film and another chance to see Colin Firth sans crazy P&P sideburns. 😉

Knitting Update
I actually am working on a non-sock project, which I’ll talk about it a few days. First, I need to get some input on this sock I’ve started. I can’t decide whether using the 9 to 5 pattern on this yarn is a good thing, or whether I should rip back and just knit the sock in stockinette. What do you think?

“I just can’t decide, Mom – I like them both! Maybe if I ate one of those Addis while I was thinking…” -Mayhem

  1. I like the pattern because it makes the yarn look like the Brach’s coconut candies!
It does feel good to take a break from the computer even if we get behind. Hope you had a lovely weekend!

  2. Chris- Margene is right- I love those candies!

(why do so many colors remind us of food? I think it’s a subliminal thing that the yarn companies are doing)

Maybe they should do “cat chow brown” or “tuna pink”?

  3. Hmmm – I think both pattern/no pattern work, but I like the stockinette better. But I agree – picot edge or something to jazz it up!!

And Cricket suggests that you switch to Addi Naturas, or some wooden DPNs. Teeth marks show up MUCH better in the nice, soft wood!

  4. Hello! This is my first comment, your blog one of my favorites to read at work! Um, by work I mean in my free time when I’m supposed to be doing non-work things…
    I vote for stockinette.

  5. I’ve blocked out how many different patterns I tried with that exact same Trekking. I wound up with plain stockinette. Everything got lost in the colors. But I do love that colorway.

  6. Love Actually, Bridget Jones and Pride & Prejudice. Movies that make my husband jealous…
Thanks for posting about my contest! : )
I’d go for the stockinette sock myself, with picot cuff.

  7. Have you seen Bride and Prejudice? A modern Asian/British musical take on the original. Sort of a mix between Bollywood and Bend it Like Beckham. – It has to be one of my favourites at the moment 🙂

  8. i think it depends on what you feel like knitting, but the dye pattern shows up better in the stockinette. maybe a semi-solid yarn for the 9-5 pattern?

  9. What a nice relaxing long weekend. Both versions look good but I like the 9 to 5 pattern better. It gives the sock a fluffy look and something different from your standard stockinette.

  10. I like them both, but think my preference is the stockinette – b/c I LOVE that neopolitan colorway so much, why make it compete?
    Glad your holiday was restful!
    (((hugs)))

  11. I like the pattern. It softens the lines of the coloring. I agree with an earlier post that it reminds me of that chewy candy – I wonder if they make that anymore?

  12. Hmmm, I think I like the stockinette better, since the yarn patterning is pretty cool on it’s own.

And glad you had a relaxing weekend! Mine was a bit hectic, but I found some knitting time in there. 😉

  13. Stockinette all the way. That yarn is ice cream colored and has enough going on already! (I love it!!) Thanks for being the “town crier” of the knitting blogs, by the way. I love reading your blog for updates on everyone else! 🙂

  14. Stockinette definitely. I think the pattern gets lost in the self striping action and you should save the pattern for a yarn that will show it off more.

  15. I don’t know about a *relaxing* long weekend – I know what you were up to! 🙂

I like them both – and agree about the candy colors. I think you’ll win either way…

  16. I must admit, i like the plain stockinette stitch one better. and yum, it looks like neopolitan ice cream. Mae would like some neopolitan Ice cream I think, sans chocolate.

Maybe that is what she was licking her lips from. 🙂

  17. I like them both, but I’d do the pattern, because plain old stockinette bores me to tears! And what is the yarn? Sorry if you’ve already said – and I know I’ve seen it on other blogs, too….

  18. How’s this for noncommital? I like that you can see the color patterning in the stockinette, but I think the texture pattern is interesting too. What will keep your interest better? That’s what you should do.
