In which I bow to peer pressure and turn on my tv

Recently, several friends noted that they would not be able to continue speaking to me if I did not watch Pride and Prejudice very, very soon. Since Jeanne loaned me the DVDs back in, um, March maybe, I could see why she’d want me to get this out of the way.

So Saturday night, I sat down with my latest sock project and a gluten-free beer and watched the miniseries.

“Hey May, Mom’s got the DVD player open – maybe we’ll get to watch our kitty DVD again!” -Chaos

“That is not our kitty DVD. Hmph.” -Mayhem

“I give this DVD one tongue out because it didn’t have enough cats or pigeons.” -Chaos

“Hmph.” -Mayhem

The kitties were unimpressed, but I enjoyed it (but oh, those sideburns – I hated them something fierce!) and am looking forward to watching Bridget Jones’s Diary again to catch all the allusions to Pride and Prejudice. (Scroll down to the “Trivia” section at the IMDB entry for Bridget Jones’s Diary to read about all of the references.)

  1. I have been meaning to watch that forever. Sorry it only received a one tongue rating from the “children” though(they are just waiting for their kitty DVD). Have a good week.

  2. Wow – almost fainted when you said tv, but came back to consciousness when I saw it was a DVD miniseries 😉 Glad you enjoyed it and the kitties learned the DVD is good for more than pigeon flicks…

  3. One of my favorite miniseries ever, I even bought the dvd many years ago and been in love with Colin Firth since then! He’s so sexy in that movie! ; )

  4. I’m afraid I’m outside the joke — are you officially boycotting TV or just not watching it? I like Colin too, so maybe I’ll have to check it out. The cats watch anything with us, maybe because they don’t know about kitty DVDs…shhhh…

  5. I am such a fan of this miniseries. I first saw it after I had foot surgery and my roommate consoled me with beautiful Colin Firth. It was a great way to recover.

  6. I have to admit that, although my TV is on constantly, I’ve never seen P&P. Does it count that I’ve read the book? (And I’ve now put it in my Netflix queue.)

  7. LOL at the Chaos “one tongue rating”! Hey I didn’t even know there was a Pride and Prejudice mini-series. I’ve read the book though.

  8. That is an excellent version of PandP. The sideburns are a bit much. We just watched Colin Firth in The Importance of Being Earnest, which I enjoyed very much, and he doesn’t have sideburns in that one.

  9. Of all the versions of Pride & Prejudice out there (other than the outstanding novel itself), I like the old BBC version with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul. They will ALWAYS be Lizzie and Darcy to me.

Oh, and Bridget Jones is FULL of references. Yummy. And Firth is better as THAT Mr. Darcy than as Jane’s

  10. I’m sure you (like the rest of us) could ignore the sideburns – Colin Firth is beyond yummy. I’ve actually sat and watched a Disney movie called “What a Girl Wants” every time its on tv simply because the girls father is Colin Firth.

  11. We just watched that two weekends ago, then last weekend we went to “Becoming Jane.” We’re big fans of theme movie watching. We’ll either watch a handful with a common actor or we’ll watch different interpretations. Pride and Prejudice with Bridget Jones is one of our favs. As is Emma and Clueless 🙂

  12. And furthermore there were all those gratuitous dog scenes! No fun for kitties.

Ooh, I loved it too… But is it really right that Lizzie should be prettier than Jane? (And did you recognize Duckface from 4 Weddings and a Funeral?)

  13. I’ve only seen the more recent one released in theatres about 18 months ago and that Mr. Darcy took my breath away. BTW – that’s hardly “turning on your TV”.

  14. I am not a big fan of period films so I’v never seen P&P – any version. SO I would have still talked to you. I did like Colin Firth Shakespeare in Love though.

  15. Colin Firth – w/ or w/out sideburns is completely yummy. I can’t believe the cats didn’t like it.

And I’m with Deb. Watching P&P on DVD is not exactly “turning on your TV.”

  16. I totally agree – Colin Firth in anything, with or without facial hair, is okay in my book. And I had to go back to watch P&P – it just may have been Bridget Jones’ Diary that did it for me. (And I hate Renee Zellweger very very much.) I love him in Love, Actually and What a Girl Wants as well. He definitely is the best Darcy, although the most recent one looks great in the part (not so cute in modern times though).

  17. Damn, I just finished reading the comments. Colin Firth is in Shakespeare in Love? And that’s not a period piece, how? Anywho, I hated that movie so so much, and now I may have to watch it again just for him!

  18. PPS – also, Girl with a Pearl Earring (not a big Scarlet Johansson fan, but it was good) and Nanny McPhee are good Colin Firth movies to see.

  19. I can’t believe no one asked the most important question of the day (well, unless I missed it). How does the gluten-free beer compare to the usual kind?

  20. P&P has been done and re-done to death, but I have to admit, I enjoyed that miniseries. I also really like the Bollywood version which is called Bride and Predjudice.

  21. One tongue out, huh? My one tongue is always busy drooling over the dreamy Colin Firth when I watch the BBC P&P. Not a big fan of either the Keira Knightley version (vapid) or the Bollywood remake (equally vapid, but at least colorful).
