Maestro Mayhem

Reading Update
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Wow. Just wow. This Pulitzer-winning novel kept me enthralled for over 500 pages. It was also one of my TBR Challenge books. I’ll be reading Eudenides’ novel The Virgin Suicides in the near future!
Cast On, Bets Off by Jack Olesker. I know, I just picked it up Saturday, but I was curious. It’s about yarn store owners Max and Lisa, who are deputized by Max’s brother to help solve a murder. It seemed a wee bit overdone at times, but I think that might just be because I read it right after Middlesex… It’ll be interesting to see how the characters develop in the next book. The Yarn Harlot has a tiny spot in the book, which was very fun to read. Strangely, as I was reading it, May walked up and ate part of the front cover while I gaped at her! That’s an unpleasant new development in the her ongoing snacking on household items project.

Speaking of May, I shall momentarily distract you with cute pictures of her, since I got nothin’ else. I’m nearly done with the toddler dress – just a bazillion ends to weave in. And I’m working on a secret project, which we all know is bad for the blog, but necessary for the life. 🙂

  1. Wow ms chris…you get a LOT more reading done than I’m able to manage. Always love your updates tho, every once in awhile a recommendation interests me and I *gasp* get back to reading a bit. Not enough time in the day….

  2. I have the Virgin Suicides on Audiobooks if you want to download it to an iPod. I also have Middlesex in a real live book format. It’s the only book you’ve ever mentioned that we’ve had in common. Now I’ll have to read it! May makes me feel like singing today “La la la la laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…..”

  3. I loved Middlesex too.

Do cats teethe? I know Gracie went through a “chew on everything” phase when she was losing her puppy teeth and getting her adult dog teeth.

  4. Middlesex was fantastic, I thought it was far better than The Virgin Suicides. The latter was good, just not as amazing. After you’re done with that, you must read The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger if you haven’t yet. It was so good I wanted to stop reading to make it last longer. But I couldn’t.

  5. * reaches out to scratch the cute kitty tummy on the screen* If only that worked! Great photos- the last one made me snort my coffee.

  6. Chris- How do you manage to read so much?
    I’m so out of touch.

Not in any way to take away from May- but was that “Pride and Prejudice” in the background. Colin Firth-mmmm!

Have you ever seen “My Life So Far”?

  7. Lorraine’s got it right–I too noticed the P&P. From yesterday: I’ve not see you post any lace…Supersecret project, maybe?

So can an 8-year old cat be teething? While my needles are safe-watch out books, paper, and cords. Typically cured by cuddling and attention, where’s the Cat Whisperer? Call her wuickly while May is still in training…

  8. Can’t wait to see what part May plays in a rock band! That’s amazing that she would bite the book…maybe she knew that’s how to get your attention! Charlie knows if I’m deep in concentration, the only way to make me listen is to do something bad, that is normally beneath him. “Whatever it takes,” he sighs.

  9. It’s weird. I’ve tried reading Middlesex two different times and couldn’t get into it! Weird…..I know everyone seems to love it!

  10. I thought Middlesex was engaging and fascinating, in addition to being very well-written. I bought it as a gift for my husband, and he loved it, so I read it, too.

Naughty May! Cats do lose their baby teeth.

  11. When my Rottweiler was a puppy, she used to eat little rocks. I’d tell her, “That’s going to hurt coming out!” but she never listened.

Also, our first boy, T, used to eat sand in the sandbox. I’d tell her the same thing, but he, also wouldn’t listen. He’d have sand in his poopy diapers. EWWWW (too much info, sorry)

    Damn, you read fast!

  12. Great photos of May! The bookcover had to taste bad to a carnivore. I think May may want to be an eccentric.

I haven’t read Middlesex, but you are not the person I know of who really liked it. I’ll have to give it a try.

  13. Even at age 12 Sassy spends more time with her front paws in the air than not. Isn’t it amazing how much they love to play?

I LOVE May’s hint of a white bib. So delicate and whispy

  14. I am hoping to read Middlesex soon, too! I started reading it at a bookstore a couple months ago, but I really hate buying books new. Nobody I know owns it, so I’m currently on to The Sex Lives of Cannibals lent me by my co-worker, the Amazing Hairless Man. Ok, that isn’t really his name. 😉 But I thought I’d throw that in cause it always makes me laugh to call him that.

  15. Awww! Cute May. No. Wait. Must. Not. Be. Sucked. In. Awww! NO! It’s a trap. A cuteness trap. Oh heck. Why not? Pretty kitty.

  16. I’ve heard of gulping a book before, but I don’t think it’s meant literally, May.

Lovely orchestra you’re leading! Nice to see her getting into it.

And ON THE KITCHEN table? LOL! Bad kitty. Sheba would be proud of you. Did you lick the butter dish? I hear it’s quite a delicacy.

  17. Those are awesome pictures of May. I love cat armpits. They make these sleek and imperious beings look like kittens again no matter how big and sophisticated they get. 🙂

  18. Middlesex was great! My husband is Greek so the whole family dynamics thing was spot on. Someone recommended the Time Traveler’s wife – great book as well!

  19. Thanks for the new book ideas. always fun.
Love the snap of May ‘conducting’ – good that our kitties are so entertaining for us!

  20. I had a dog who was a voracious reader–he preferred Shakespeare, pulled a volume right out of the bookshelf to sample.

  21. It is somehow comforting to know that other animals eat crazy things too! Terry used to eat the carpet in my apartment, now that we’re in my home he eats the dust bunnies…it used to bother me a lot, but then I realized it was less housework for me!
    May is so cute playing!!
