I can wait a minute while you collect yourselves after reading that title. Better now?
I picked up a nifty little booklet called Knitting for Babies a few weeks ago at Amazing Threads. I’ll apologize in advance because my google-fu failed me and I can’t tell you where to get this $3.99 booklet other than where I found a copy. The cover says “Display until November 14” and apparently that’s November of 2006… If anyone has more information, let me know in the comments and I’ll update the post. Anyway Many thanks to Sarah, who knew that the booklet is available from Beth Walker-O’Brien (who designed the cute dress you’ll see momentarily). It has a slightly different cover on that site. That link is dead. You can find the lacy tank pattern at HowStuffWorks.
The booklet is filled with more than a dozen worthwhile patterns, such as this penguin hat…
…several cute sweaters…
…more bibs (bibs!)…
…and this adorable lace dress:
“…dum de dum de dum de dum… Oh, were you trying to take a picture, Mom?” -M
I’m knitting that dress for my friends’ toddler, out of SWTC A-MAIZing. Yup, yarn made entirely from corn and machine washable to boot. Who woulda thunk it?
“Corn? Really? Well, I do like popcorn, although this sure doesn’t look like popcorn…” -M
“Don’t get any ideas about snacking on that dress, May!” -me
Here’s the page with information on the designers from the booklet – maybe you can track down some of the patterns from them?? (Click to see the details.)
Those are some really cute patterns. I especially like the hat!
I picked up that book in the grocery store checkout line last year. The unbearable cuteness of the babies in the hats did me in as I had no babies to knit for at the time.
A Linux hat :o)
And I agree with Mom, No snacking on the dress, Mayhem!
I wonder if I could make a hat like that for myself?! (What?!)
That booklet is available at Beth Walker-O’Brien’s site (she’s the designer of that cute dress you’re making): http://www.knitsillustrated.com. I made the dress last year, using Hempathy from Elsebeth Lavold. Wonderful!!
Oh — the booklet appears to have a different cover on Beth’s site, but it’s the same patterns.
That penquin hat! Aaaaaaaaahghglglgl
I love that book. It’s… refreshingly non horrifying. 😉
I love the penguin hat. I have a very soft spot for penguins. Did you know that? Penguins and ladybugs. And anything orange. These are a few of my favourite things…
Google was kinder to me.
It’s by that company that does the recipe booklets at checkouts. Sadly, doesn’t seem to be any way to order back issues.
Hmm! How come you seldom knit anything for your “babies”? How about a nice catnip-filled bear?
Rebekah of KnitKnacks knit the boys some penguin hats from that book – they are ADORABLE and got lots of compliments – I just hope their large craniums can wear them next year.
I love that blue hoodie – do you think they make it in grown-up sizes?
those are so cute – the little guy in the penguin hat is fab.
Love that teensy lace dress – and you know, I wonder if it would taste like corn to May??
what a cute booklet!
what do you think of the yarn? i was looking into it when it first came out but i haven’t seen it in person. does it behave similarly to bamboo?
Oh, that looks like a nice collection. Were there more copies available at AT? How long ago did you buy it?
That lace dress is adorable! My seven-year-old has been watching me make my skirt and sighing, “I wish I had a skirt like that”. I’m going to have to break down and make something cute and lacy for her this summer.
Perhaps an Ebay search might turn up more copies?
“google-fu” LOL! *snort* You crack me up. 😉
A purple dress? But… you never knit in purple! 🙂
Adorable dress–can’t wait to see how yours turns out!
I love the penguin hat! SO CUTE!
Love the cute sweaters. 🙂
Chris- My 18 year old son wants one of those hats- it does look like the Linux Penguin.
Computer geek, y’know.
Isn’t it fascinating what they make yarn from these days? Kitten-Chow is waiting for the day they invent tuna-spinning.
What a cute booklet! Everyone has to branch out once in awhile; I’ve never knit a bib, but I think that’s going to be one of this weekend’s projects. Thanks for the inspiration!
How big can you make one of those penguin hats?
Oh to bad Monday was “whacky hat day” at school because Kathryn LOVES penquins and would have loved that hat!!
While you’re at it, could you just whip out some extra baby stuff? I’ve got a bunch of pregnant friends and not much time to knit for them. And I know two of them are absolutely expecting hand knit gifts. You could be the official baby [bib?] knitter of blog land and we could all pay you to be our ghost knitters!
That booklet looks awesome! I love the little penguin hat.
Really cute baby patterns. I love the purple of that yarn. What is the weight of it? Is it soft, stretchy? I’m not asking if it’s tasty, May!
I have that book!!! I found it in November at the local grocery store. I barely had enough cash to pay for groceries & the book but I bought it anyways! Its a great one too!!!
That penguin hat (and baby) are TOO cute!
You had me at the penquin hat! Now to just get out my graph paper and upsize it to actual human adult proportions. I think my bro needs one – Linux version, to go with the iHat ASCII hat I made him earlier this year.
Too cute! Baby K would look adorable in hand-knit dresses, but A) I am busy with the Rockin Sock Club and 2) I don’t think I knit fast enough for things to fit her at this point. I hope she hits a growth plateau between 2 and 3 yrs old…I might have time to finish something by then!!!
Oh, I’m liking that penguin hat!
very cute!
I love it! Now you need butter scented dryer sheets to go with that dress and it will be the best smelling dress ever!
That penguin hat is TOO CUTE!
Cute booklet! I really like the penguin hat.
Knitting for Babies? Is it really safe to allow them to play with those pointy sticks ;o)
I bought that book back in October or November. There really are quite a few cute patterns. I forgot I had it; I’ll have to get it out again. Thanks for reminding me 🙂
Nice find! And you all are pretty funny with wanting to make up the penguin hat adult sized for linux geeks!
Oh, I know a grown up who would LOVE that penguin hat.
LOL at Chaos showing up May on the Escaping The Bib bit. With age (and experience) comes wisdom.
JA Jance has a new series out? I’ll have to check it out.
Did you see there is a correction on the lace dress at that site?
Cute, must buy!!
must.make.penguin.hat.
Guess I’m not alone in loving that penguin hat! It is too cute.
That dress will make a lovely gift.
Lovely colour 🙂 I really like that penguin hat!
I lucked out on one of these last year at Byerly’s with only two left in the store. Good idea on using the corn yarn, it’s a very pretty purple! My parents had a cat who loved popcorn too.
What a great pattern book, love the hat and the dress
Love the kitty paw hovering over the photo!
Yarn made from corn? Who woulda thunk? Does it have a weird texture or anything? Or smell like corn? 😉
