In which I am only vaguely coherent, due to having no brain left after 6 hours of finishing on Sunday

Many thanks to the inimitably funny Tink of Pickled Beef for awarding me a “Playful” Golden Spork Award! I am honored!Oh, yeah, you’re probably curious about what the heck I finished on Sunday, eh, since all you know I’m knitting is a pair of socks? 😉 Well, some of you might remember that I’ve been working on a moderne log cabin baby blanket, which is a shower gift for a baby born in, um, *whispers* early May. Of this year, at least!! Anyway, I don’t think I’ve even mentioned this blanket since September… I probably finished the knitting in September or early October, but I still had the finishing to do. Lots and lots of finishing – innumerable ends, mostly (damn knotty skeins), but also mattress stitch at the four corners on the border. Have I mentioned how anal I am about weaving in ends? It involves splitting plied yarn and weaving in twice as many ends as if I hadn’t split the yarn… Anyway! I knew this was going to be a horrific finishing job, so I’ve been dawdling on it (especially since I can’t read while I finish). Finally, the next book in the series I was reading was only available (through my library system) on cd, so I buckled down and listened to that and finished the blanket. Darn book was only 5.75 hours long, so during the last 15 minutes I was left with nothing to do but weave in ends… Ack.

Without further ado, I present you with the Chaotic (and Mayhemic?!) Moderne Log Cabin Baby Blanket. (It actually is rectangular, although you can’t necessarily tell that from these pictures – it was hard to lay it out with all the “help” I got… Really, all you have to do around here for a photo opportunity is create an attractive nuisance…)

“Why are you standing on the coffee table, Mom?” -C&M

“You’re not the boss of me, big kitty!” -M

“Don’t sass your elders, May.” -C

“Run away!!” -M

“I wonder if this would taste like tuna?” -C
“Hmm, can I gnaw a hole in this before Mom gets off the coffee table?” -M

  1. Heh heh, turn your back for 5 seconds and you can bet there will be hole!

Great blanket! It just looks so cozy, I wish I could curl up in it. I love that first picture, kinda looks like May has her tongue out.

  2. Hmm, baby pictures, baby blankets. Are you trying to tell us something?
It looks smashing. But are you sure you didn’t spill some ink on it. I keep seeing black spots. And they seem to be moving about the blanket. Strange.

  3. Beautiful blanket! And the nice thing about those colors is that they last beyond infancy. That’ll be a great treasure.

And kudos on the finishing. My hat’s off to you on all that work.

  4. Excuse me, but what’s this about the splitting and weaving in twice as many ends? Is this something you do on purpose?

    The blanket looks gorgeous though.

  5. Hey Chris- You really are good at photography, among other things.
The first picture looks like a modern-art piece.
Don’t the cats look sort of painted in?

  6. Lovely blanket! Plus the colors are nice for the, uh, older baby. 🙂 I could probably stand to be more anal with weaving in ends. My goal is usually to get through the finishing as quickly as possible.

There’s nothing like a hand knit blanket to bring out the cats. LOL!

  7. Great blanket…………and, now I can really see how much different in size Chaos and May are…………but, they seem to like each other a bit better!

  8. Congratulations on your award — it is totally well-deserved! And thanks for the link to Tink’s site and list. When I have a little time (yeah, like that’s gonna happen) I want to check out all of the sites s/he mentioned.

The blanket (and the felines, of course) is absolutely gorgeous. I’m a personal hater of the pukey trdiational pastels for babies, so your color choices strike me as pure genius. Great job.

  9. The blanket’s gorgeous, and I’m sure it will be much appreciated, even if it wasn’t done in May. And I’ve heard of splitting the ply and weaving each ply in different directions, but I’ve never known anyone who actually did that……

  10. Beautiful blanket! Congratulations on such a thorough and large finishing job. I envy you your ability to knit and read simultaneously.

May is getting big! I love your cat pictures. Our condo lease doesn’t allow us to have pets, so until we can afford to buy, I have to love cats vicariously. My husband thinks you have the best named pets in the history of pet naming. I am always showing him pictures of Mayhem and Chaos.

  11. Fabulous blanket – well worth all the time you took. And you know, every time you post pictures of your cats, it weakens my resolve of no more pets!

  12. OH I love your blanket, you gave me a great idea for my blanket for my house. Although my husband is a slave to symmetry (I can’t even spell it – thus I’m no slave to it).

The cats definitely help in the cuteness of the blanket though.

  13. Chaos is the boss of us all, May. Don’t bother fighting it.

Pretty Moderne Log Cabin! I’d just figured you’d finished it off. SIX hours of finishing? That must be some finicky work you do. Want to finish mine?

  14. you know… it’s good for a baby to be exposed to animal dander. supposedly gives them a better immune system.
Blankie looks awesome, cats and all!
