In which I have pizza delivered for the first time in 12 years

Getting pizza delivered probably isn’t a big deal to most of you who live in any sort of populated area. However, since going gluten-free in 1997, pizza delivery hasn’t been an option for me… until just a few weeks ago, when my neighborhood pizzeria, Galactic Pizza, began offering a gluten-free pizza.

Galactic Pizza’s pretty cool all around. They have some electric cars they use to deliver pizzas, such as this one, captured blurrily last fall:

You might be wondering what the heck the delivery driver is wearing, huh? Well, the Galactic Pizza drivers dress up like superheroes. I tried to take some unobtrusive photos when my pizza was delivered Saturday, but they were so unobtrusive that they pretty much sucked.

Sadly, he wasn’t driving one of the wee electric cars.

The anticipation builds… You can’t see it from this picture, but apparently if I save this box and turn it in the next time I get one of their pizzas, I’ll get $0.50 off. Hopefully they recycle the boxes, because the city of Minneapolis won’t accept pizza boxes for recycling.

And here it is, a gluten-free pepperoni and mushroom pizza with vegan (gf/df) cheese. I know, I know, the cheese doesn’t melt like “real” cheese – but it also won’t leave me in agony.

And it was pretty darn tasty, especially washed down with a gluten-free beer.

  1. Cool, pizza!

I’m not exactly gluten- or dairy-free, but I made some cupcakes (chocolate-mint) this weekend from a new book that were both gluten-free and dairy-free and they were really good!

  2. As someone who can relate (except for the cheese thing) – I share your joy! When they started offering g/f pizza crust at one chain here, I was thrilled!

Man, I hope they pay their delivery guys well…

  3. OMG.. I don’t order pizza (too expensive…) but Munchkin would LOVE to have a pizza (his favorite food) delivered by a caped super hero!! Glad you were able to have a treat delivered!

  4. That is pretty cool! I think I’ll be looking for gluten/dairy free stuff soon – my daughter has two friends that need each and we are doing a birthday party…. I’ll be scouring your archives.

  5. Can I be happy for you at the same time I am a little sad for the pizza?

:: shudders at the thought (and picture) of non-melting cheese ::

  6. Hmmm…that actually doesn’t look too bad. Pity about the non-melty cheese. Does it burn your mouth anyway? Pizza it’s the same without the burned mouth.

  7. Pizza and beer. Can’t get much better than that, especially if you don’t have to make it yourself.

I must confess to feeling a little sorry for the delivery guys, though, in the superhero costumes.

  8. Chaos: Here’s what you do. You wait till your mom is out of the room, then jump up on the counter and help yourself to pizza. Who follows rules??!

P.S. Just don’t burn your mouth on the cheese. That’s no fun. And it’s best if you leave little kitty teeth marks in the crust so she knows what you did.

  9. you know, i actually think i saw them on tv…or maybe it was a similar idea in Portland! Very eco cool! I wouldn’t think that would work too well in snowbanks though.

  10. Woo hoo! Hurray for Galactic Pizza. BTW, the Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee has a pretty awesome tour where you can see New Grist in the works.

  11. 1. I LOVE that the drivers wear superheroes costumes! Oliver would shit his pants if a superhero came to deliver pizza. LMAO!

    2. That’s the prettiest design on a pizza box I’ve ever seen.

    3. Okay, so the cheese kind of looks like…well, I won’t say it, but the pizza looks pretty damn good. 😉

    4. Chaos, on the other hand, looks thrilled.

  12. Yeah! There is a pizza shop along one of my walking routes that has signs out for Gluten Free pizza. I’ve never tried it, but I always appreciated knowing that the option is out there.

  13. Oooh I was thinking about you last night when I was in the gluten free section of our not-so-local fine food store yesterday. Hooray for GF pizza!

  14. Chris – THAT is truly an event worthy of blogging about. Whoohoo – delivery pizza!
I can’t imagine all it takes to adjust to eating as you do, it has to have been a challenge, but I’m so glad you can do something as normal as ordering pizza out again! That’s a celebration!
    ((((((hugs))))))

  15. Well, I think it looks delicious – and I think all the delivery guys should drive like that!

  16. YaY!!! I think the only time I’ve had pizza delivered in the past dozen years has been when my pal Ginny’s husband died, and we were too exhausted (or drunk) to go out and get it. Those superheros, though, they are HILAROUS… and definitely they’d get a tip from me!

  17. Oh Chaos, we feel so bad for you and the no pizza for cats rule at your house. We are allowed to nom nom on the crusts for a while if we want. Ok better than nothing.

  18. Don’t fret, Chaos, we don’t let Socks and MIttens have pizza either. (Although I have been known to sneak them some roasted chicken from time to time.)

  19. Yay for pizza delivery! It looks really good even if the cheese doesn’t melt. How can you not like pizza delivered by superheroes.

  20. superheros? Pizza? Beer? Sounds like a great night to me!! Glad your local place is so cool!

And please tell Chaos (not that it’ll help) but we have a no pizza for cats rule too (although sometimes it’s hard to enforce… sneaky little devils!)
