Sort of new glasses

Yes, I picked up my new glasses on Friday… and I’m pretty sure no one will ever notice that they’re new. Why? Because I got the exact same frames in a slightly different shade. Below, the glasses in back (old) are “Tan” and the glasses in front (new) are “Olive.”

Pretty radical change, eh? Not. I always go in for new glasses, resolving to get something exciting and different… and then reality hits. I have a narrow face, so there aren’t a lot of adult glasses that will even fit me. Since most of the kids’ glasses aren’t really my thing (Hot pink! With butterflies! And daisies!), I won’t wear plastic frames (must have the nose pads that wire frames use), I’m anti-bling on glasses (the JLo line was particularly scary), and my prescription restricts me to somewhat small lenses… Yeah. I didn’t see anything that I liked more than the poor old beat up frames I already had.

“Let’s just give them a taste anyway…” -Mayhem

Gotta go! Must rescue glasses!

  1. I have trouble getting new glasses too… narrow bridge. And really square/rectangular glasses don’t look good at all. Probably the best shape is the one you have, but I diverged widely from that last time… not sure it was the best choice for me! Oh yes, I think you need a new wardrobe now!

  2. I’m in the same boat with glasses. Everything is too big for my little face. Slim pickings.

My foster kitten Moe loved to chew on my glasses … and my bamboo double points … and my circular cables … oh and yarn … pretty much anything I loved. He definately was not a knitter’s cat.

  3. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! That’s what I say. I used to wear glasses, and had the same problem finding something suitable…then I just said to hell with it, and took the plunge and had laser eye surgery.

  4. Well, in my defense, I did not see the tiny rhinestones on my frames while trying them on without glasses, hee hee. My frames don’t vary much, either.

  5. Nom, nom, nom!

If you know what works, then there’s nothing wrong with that! I LOVE trying on glasses, but yeah – I often wind up with the same frames.

  6. Are all the glasses in your neck of the woods narrow as well? I had to get glasses recently (my last pair dated back to the early 90s) and every frame was about 1 inch high, not particularly flattering on my fat face. I got black-framed nerd glasses that are pink on the skin-side. No butterflies or daisies though.

  7. Chris- I like the Olive color. I have the opposite problem, big fat moon face, so I need angular lenses.

Save the rhinestones for when you move to Florida and join a bridge club.

  8. You know, I’ll bet that the new olive color looks really good on you – truly! I mean it! – rather like eye-liner, it really makes a difference what we put around our eyes.
Margene’s comment made me chuckle 😀

  9. Hmm, that reminds me I need to get my eyes checked this year…

The last time though? The assistant in charge of my choosing new glasses? Didn’t believe me that I wanted something similar. So it was like the first time I’d ever gotten glasses…we tried EVERYTHING on me. 2 hours later? Yep, frames so similar to my old ones that we were both kinda disappointed.

  10. I was at -9 diopters and did LASIK. I had 20/20 for a while which was glorious. It settled to 20/40 which means that I can actually function without glasses around the house, although I do have a pair for driving and distance. I almost hyperventilated during the surgery, but I’m still glad I did it.

  11. At least you got to change colors–I like the olive. My coloring is so fair (except for my hair) that I pretty much have to have frames the color of my hair, or all one sees are the frames.

I think May needs a doggy chew toy. I’m sure she’ll find such an idea offensive, but if the shoe fits…

  12. I also had laser surgery and love it, because I was SO blind before, I could not find anything even remotely attractive in glasses. Now I need them only for night driving, and I have had the same style for at least 5 years. I do try on new pairs every chance I get, but hate most of them on my fat (read: broad and square) face. I’ll likely just hang on to these as long as they’ll let me…

  13. *hides work glasses that have bling on them*

I like to have funky glasses – but do have a standard issue not too funky pair for non-funky situations. If I had some disposable income I’d probably have glasses for every pair of shoes.

  14. I had to get new glasses last year because Raven chewed the dickens out of mine. Sigh. I really liked them too. and I have a small face, so finding glasses is a real pain. AND my prescription in too heavy for the frameless ones I lurvs….

  15. I am the exact same way – fully resolved for something completely different, then, whoosh. same old same old. It is fun to get new stuff even if no one else notices, though!

  16. At least you know they’ll be comfortable and you’ll like them. When I got new glasses this summer, I’ve regretted it ever sicne. Sure they are funky, which is what I wanted, but MY HEAD HURTS! and its hurt for months. And I have big ruts in my skull. And it hurts!

I’m a little annoyed by my new glasses. Glad you are not annoyed at yours.

  17. We’re anti-bling here too. I vary a little bit but basically I end up with something boring. Maybe someday I’ll brave and get something different.

  18. Hey, green is adventurous! I like ’em!

My glasses are usually that shape and rough size. The last pair, though, had, um, hemi-hexagonal bottoms, oval tops, with thin black inlay in the gold rims. Hard to describe.

Anyway, when my younger daughter saw them (about 6 at the time), she said, “Mom! You have muffin-shaped glasses!”

The ones I just got are rimless and I like them better than when I tried rimless 10 years ago. Still get out of adjustment more easily. But so light, and great vision! A small fortune, though, due to various eye weirdnesses as well as the frames; I’d better take good care of these puppies.

  19. Ugh, I know exactly what you mean about glasses drama/trauma! My face looks totally normal until I go try on glasses, and then I discover all these bizarre structural flaws!

  20. I just did the “new glasses” adventure myself, hoping they will get here today. I have always gone for the big frame – ‘owl’ look. I was talked into a smaller frame this time and I’m really anxious, lol. I think they look funny on me, but with my Rx, the lens are sooooo thick that big frames are not a good idea. Pretty hard to change something like that after 40 years! scary, lol!! the frames I picked I recall as being light brown, but I noticed on the order it says “lilac” and I freaked out, OMG!!! is it going to be BRIGHT lilac??? Eeeek!

  21. a new color even if it is the same frame style is still worthy of new classes celebration.
Beleave me, I pretty much just switch between 2 styles each time i get new ones.
