- Lisa’s having a contest – send her an email guessing whose home is pictured and you could win enough yarn for a small project. Send your emails by August 29, 6 pm EDT.
- Although WinSCP behaved well at work, I haven’t been able to get it to connect from home – it might be fighting with my firewall. However, CoreFTP Lite does work from home, plus has the other features I needed.
- Over the weekend, I biked 15 miles on Saturday, then walked/wandered five miles. On Sunday, I biked another 20 miles. I’m slowly getting more comfortable on my new bike, but my legs are not very happy with me right now.
- Last week, I ordered a few things from amazon.com, using the free shipping. They shipped my stuff in two separate packages. No big deal, right? Except… the first package I received said “1 of 51.” Eeeek!!! Fortunately, there weren’t any weird charges on my credit card, nor have 49 extraneous boxes appeared.
- Remember my Bake Neko (oldschool ipod shuffle) woes last month? It still plays, but when I skip ahead to the next song, it goes dormant for a while. In frustration, I bought a SanDisk Sansa Clip 4 GB mp3 player. My only complaint (which I knew before I bought it) is that the Clip doesn’t play m4a/aac (a common ipod music format, besides being what of a lot of my music library is). I do have plenty of mp3 music – but the main reason I bought it is because it should be NetLibrary compatible (and I have free NetLibrary access via my local library system). (I haven’t verified this yet!) It also has an FM receiver.
- Apologies to those who friend me on GoodReads, as I’m nearly inert there. Most of my time is spent on LibraryThing.
- I’ve been seeing a lot more people on bicycles and scooters since gas prices went up… but I’m not seeing a lot of people with helmets. You won’t get me on a bike with out a helmet. If you need some reinforcement on the importance of helmets, maybe Kellee’s photos after being hit by a bus will inspire you.
- Remember my sheepy water bottle? I’ve been using it, and I have to say that this Laken brand bottle has the least metallic taste of the bottles I’ve tried. (The others were Sigg aluminum and Enviro stainless steel.)
- I never followed up on the whole internet dating thing, did I? One word sums it up: meh. I went on four or five first dates and even a few second dates. The only guy I found really intriguing (cyclist whose best female friend is married to the guy who was the best man in my wedding 19 years ago – how weird is that?!) got back together with someone he had dated in the past. Ah well. My backup plan of becoming a crazy cat lady seems to be proceeding apace.
- If you’re really bored, you can wander through my Google Reader shared items. They aren’t in my blog sidebar because I haven’t found a way to format the snippet (the five most recent items) so it doesn’t look horrible. Dang, you can also subscribe to a feed of them, if you are really, really bored. Who knew?!
- Chaos and Mayhem continue to love their ScratchScroll, although I’m not sure how much actual scratching they do. They play with the feather toy, crawl through the tunnel, and sprawl on it far more than they scratch it.
- I think I need to clean Chaos’s teeth (see below). Alas, I can’t see that happening without bloodshed (mine). I don’t think the vet will try cleaning the Chaos Kitty’s teeth again unless anesthesia is involved (for Chaos, not the vet!), although it didn’t look like his hand would scar too badly…
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” -Chaos
Eeew! How did the kitty get his teeth so dirty?
To be a “crazy cat lady”, shouldn’t you be living in a house such like the one in item #1?
You will need several more cats before you can be called “crazy cat lady” 🙂
The hubby just bought our girls a scooter and is picking it up today, I’ll make sure to show them those pics! (We live in a VERY small town, so no busy streets, luckily, but still scary).
I still ck availability on that water bottle every day… still sold out :o(
Heh, Atticus needs his teeth cleaned at the V.E.T. too.
I agree the Enviros do have a funky taste. And I’m glad you’re getting on your bike! With a helmet. I NEVER ride without mine.
Remember, when Carrie gets her castle, or Lorraine her house in the country, we’ll all do the Colour Purple thing where the women end up living with each other. Only we’ll have a dozen or more cats, and a LOT of yarn! 🙂
It’s time for Mox to go in for cleaning, too. OMG the breath is devastating.
Hurray for all the biking! And I second the helmet recommendation. My big brother sells scooters and motorcycles at a shop on Lake St., and he’s very big on telling people to wear helmets! He has lost too many friends that way.
Poor Chaos.
I’m sure the tooth cleaning would go much easier if you happen to have some tuna flavored toothpaste on hand. lol.
Wow, what a jam-packed post of information today!
Much luck with the dental enterprise.
My brother’s girlfriend’s brother got hit by a car this week while he was on his bike. The driver rolled through a stop sign and hit him, but the police want to charge her brother because he wasn’t wearing a helmet and he was riding on the sidewalk.
He is so lucky he wasn’t more seriously hurt – he got off with a sprained wrist.
Dave doesn’t wear a helmet when he bikes and it terrifies me.
Glad to hear you’re liking the water bottle!
Scary accident photo!
Hazel has to go in for a teeth cleaning tomorrow. It’s not that scary Chaos.
omg–the dreaded cat dentistry!
the vet kept telling me i needed to “brush” various cats’ teeth and i thought ‘yeah yeah yeah–YOU come to my house and do it.’ i have yet to meet anyone who successfully brushes their own cats’ teeth.
eventually both grey cat and emma needed cleanings that required anesthesia, tho. later a really nice vet explained to me that, just like people, some cats (like emma) are more prone to cavities and bad gums.
You’re going to need a lot more cats…
Then you’ll have to become crazy…
You could start using the cats as hats and dusters and stuff. That would be pretty crazy.
Why is it that I sometimes cannot read the first part of your post as the “eye” from the kitty is slipping down over top of the words. I know this sounds weird but it happens quite regularly and then doesn’t…strange….
Chris- If we follow Brigitte’s suggestion (and you are all welcome at my country estate) will we have one communal litter box- or several scattered around?
I have to consider these things.
My partner’s a Vet Tech, and we don’t brush the cats’ teeth – The cat is given a light amount of gas anesthetic – and then the gunk [technical term] is scraped off. These are some treats for cats that are more dental friendly – Best to have it done before it gets really bad, and goes into the gums, and gets an infection which would involve pills. Ick – I hate pilling cats.
Have you tried the Science Diet dental cat food? I don’t use it as the main food, but give Cal 8-10 pieces everyday. It hasn’t cleaned away the slight build up she had when I got her, but in two years it hasn’t gotten any worse. Cal’s 14 so I don’t want to put her under unless I really need to.
obsidiankitten is right. It’s genetic. My poor dog needs his teeth cleaned every 3 years or so even with dental treats and brushing.
Lorraine – you’ll need several boxes scattered around. Though of course, being out in the country you could probably let the kitties outdoors as well.
Chris, best of luck with the teeth cleaning!
I too am seeing tons of non-helmeted bikers here, and all I can think is “what will your head look like when it hits the pavement dude?” Must the mom in me. 😉
Hey, I happen to like crazy old cat ladies.
the whole internet dating thing kinda scares me – there are some bizarre people out there…
I’ve connected with a few old friends by using Facebook.
i just got cleared to ride my bike again, now i just need to get it back from my repair dude
Ha! Tell Chaos he’s lucky – he should check out Ozzie’s adventures at the Vet this week.
Simon has to get his teeth cleaned regularly, because of his heart condition. They always have to put him under, although the anesthesia might not be great for his heart. It’s definitely a vicious circle!
Sliding it crazy cat lady status is really easy….
Really – does anyone understand what bullet #2 means??????
I’m hoping that the dental-care food is enough to keep them from having to clean Mel’s teeth again too soon…even though he was exceptionally sweet and quiet while he was woozy from the anesthesia.

Ha! I once ordered a book from Chapters (a Canadian book chain like Barnes & Noble) and got something like 300 “shipping notice” emails one day. For the same book. They were coming in about once every 10 minutes or so for days until they managed to figure it out, but for a while I was terrified I was going to get 300+ copies of this one book!
Even though I nipped it in plain sight of Rufus, no one has scratched our scratchscroll. They are too big to use the tunnels, and of course it came without the toy. No sprawling either.
My parents always let the vet use anesthesia when their Burmese cat needed his teeth cleaned. Mom always claimed it was worth every penny. Good luck with Chaos!
I hope I get my cat scanner soon, so I can get my books up on LibraryThing.
I know!! What is it with people not wearing helmets!? Dumb!
I’ve seen a lot of bikers without helmets lately. I never go without a helmet.
You need a lot more cats if you’re going to become a crazy cat lady.
They make kitty toothbrushes but I’ve never gotten up enough nerve to try one.
I agree on the helmets! But I’m a big fan of safety.
My parents have been cutting my cat’s claws while they cat sit her (um, for the past 3 years)–I’m worried I’m going to have a new and unknown-to-me chore to keep up! I don’t think they ever tried brushing her teeth, though!
We actually fell for buying some of that kitty toothpaste and a toothbrush once. The cats nearly died laughing.
And crazy cat lady isn’t such a bad thing to have on your resume.
Oops, that wasn’t really Lewey the Corgi talking. Apparently he’s been using my computer again.
Hehe 🙂 Chaos looks like he has a firm bite.
