A little light’n’fluffy linkity to tide you over

Reading Update
The Phoenix Illusion (SPI Files #6)The Phoenix Files (SPI Files #6) by Lisa Shearin. I’m not exactly sure why I read this, other than the ebook was checked in at my library…
In Truth and Claw (A Mick Oberon Job #4)In Truth and Claw (Mick Oberon #4) by Ari Marmell. I tried, but I only got a few pages in and realized I wasn’t interested in continuing this series.
To Kill a Mocking Girl (Bookbinding Mystery #1)To Kill a Mocking Girl (Bookbinding Mystery #1) by Harper Kincaid. Sometimes a cozy mystery hits the spot.
In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children, #4)In an Absent Dream, Come Tumbling Down (Wayward Children, #5)Come Tumbling Down, Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children 4-5, 1) by Seanan McGuire. Tore right through In an Absent Dream and then had to go back and reread the first book because I didn’t remember who Lundy was. D’oh. Then zoomed through Come Tumbling Down, too. Whew!
Just Us: An American ConversationJust Us: An American Conversation by Claudia Rankine. Powerful. Moving. Insightful. Painful. Definitely rereading it. I watched her interview with Kerri Miller of Talking Volumes (Virtual) (MN Public Radio) and took a couple pages of notes during it.

Whirlwind linkity!

Reading Update
Citizen: An American LyricCitizen: A American Lyric by Claudia Rankine. I am not sure I understood it all, but what I did understand packed a wallop.
Dead Things (Eric Carter #1)Dead Things, Broken Souls (Eric Carter, #2)Broken Souls, Hungry GhostsHungry Ghosts, Fire Season (Eric Carter, #4)Fire Season, and Ghost Money (Eric Carter, #5)Ghost Money (Eric Carter 1-5) by Stephen Blackmoore. Entertaining series set in LA about a necromancer who’s been away for 15 years but returns after his sister is murdered. Warning that the 4th and 5th books end on cliffhangers. GRRRRRR. Also, Fire Season hits pretty hard with the fires in California right now.
City of the LostCity of the Lost by Stephen Blackmoore. Sort of a prequel for the Eric Carter series, but set before Eric Carter returned to LA.

Chaos is SO over being photographed, apparently!

Linkity will become particularly unpredictable over the next two months

I’m taking several virtual  book arts classes in September and October that are on Thursday evenings, so do not be surprised if there’s no linkity or only the most minimal of linkity. On the plus side, by the end of October, I will only need 3.5 more “graduate” credits to completed my Advanced Book Arts Certificate through the Minnesota Center for Book Arts! 🙂

FinnaFinna by Nino Cipri. What if you worked at IKEA and a wormhole opened up during your shift? A fun and thoughtful short novel based on that premise (and more).

How To Be Alone by Tanya Davis & Andrea Dorfman. Adorable illustrated book version of the video poem.
A Song Below WaterA Song Below Water by Bethany C Morrow.  Very good ya contemporary fantasy about two magical sisters-of-the-heart growing into powers that may further mark them as feared others.
How to Be Less Stupid about Race: On Racism, White Supremacy, and the Racial DivideHow To Be Less Stupid About Race: On Racism, White Supremacy, and the Racial Divide by Crystal Marie Fleming.

Tuesday Mooney Talks to GhostsTuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia. Very good novel with elements of the supernatural. It reminded me a bit of The Westing Game.
The Library of Lost and FoundThe Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick. A mousy woman inadvertently begins a life changing journey as she tries to find out the story behind a mysterious book that appears to have been written by her grandmother, but with an impossible publication date.

Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About RaceWhy I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. It took me a while to get into this one, but then I zipped through the last couple of chapters and the “Aftermath”. I appreciated the insight into racism in Britain and the author’s in-depth dissection of white feminism (vs intersectional feminism).
The Arrangement: A Good Omens ZineThe Arrangement: A charity art book inspired by Good Omens by Basil (FopDoodles). A quick one, as it was mostly fanart, with just a few textual bits.

White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial DivideWhite Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide by Carol Anderson. Excellent, very intense read. Many parts of it are heartrending and enraging and just… I had to stop reading for a bit to go donate to Black Lives Matter and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, if that helps you understand the power of this one.

How to Be an AntiracistHow to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi. This is not a “how to” book. It’s an autobiographical account of the author’s journey from racism to antiracism, with many asides setting historical context. It’s good, but it is not an easy read, in the somewhat tangled way books with an academic bent can have.
A Good Time for the Truth: Race in MinnesotaA Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota ed Sun Yung Shin. Excellent, eminently readable collection of thoughtful, thought provoking essays.
Black History In Its Own WordsBlack History in Its Own Words by Ron Wimberly. Slim collection of illustrated quotes from Black history makers.

You Can't Touch My Hair Deluxe: And Other Things I Still Have to ExplainYou Can’t Touch My Hair and Other Things I Still Have to Explain by Phoebe Robinson. Gave myself a bit of whiplash, starting this right after Me and White Supremacy and White Fragility, but it was good to take a break with a lighter look at heavy issues.

Making Our Way Home: The Great Migration and the Black American DreamMaking Our Way Home: The Great Migration and the Black American Dream by Blair Imani. This covers from 1865 through 1979 and I found it very helpful for helping me understand more how things got to where they are. I wish it would’ve included a few more recent decades, tbh. Great illustrations!
