In which autumn progresses (and surprises no one)

See the wee kittens at itty bitty kitty committee battle a spider bigger than themselves! Go, kittens, go!

It was so dreary and rainy and chilly while I was writing this post… I clung (somewhat desperately) to the memory that only this past weekend it was warm and sunny as I checked autumn’s progress while walking around Lake of the Isles.

Ahh…. That’s more like it…

Pictures from a sunny day in the past

It’s been cloudy and rainy for the past two days, but we might have some sun today. Things are looking much more autumnal now than when I took these pictures ten days ago, so you’ll just have to imagine some more leaves on the ground.

I love the rich colors of fall flowers. As with their spring and summer counterparts, I have no clue what they are, other than pretty.

See the hitching post almost hidden by the flowers below? Looks to be a more controversial style than the others I’ve photographed.

I thought this goose sculpture was very appropriate for the season.

Wow – this puts the tire swing we had as kids to shame!

“Fine, May, you can leave your phasers set to stun if you want, but I’m taking Mom out after that last bib incident!” -Chaos

“But big kitty, we don’t have thumbs. Who will throw furry mice for me?!!” -Mayhem

Not quite a dozen…

I totally miscounted – I had ten bibs finished for the baby shower on Saturday and decided that was a very good number indeed. Whew! (Ok, yeah, so I sewed on the last button about an hour before the shower started – what’s your point?!)

As soon as I had the bibs on the floor for a photo, Chaos took matters into his own paws.

“Ha!” -Chaos

“Give it up, Mom. I’m not getting off these bibs.” -Chaos

“No way, no how. I’m wise to you and your little bib racket.” -Chaos

“Well, crap. Since when do you hold another bib in reserve?!” -Chaos

“I can’t believe I fell for that one. I’m so ashamed.” -Chaos

Undecided trees

Wendy’s giving away a copy of Favorite Socks: 25 Timeless Designs and a copy of Alice Starmore’s Fisherman’s Sweaters. Leave a comment before this afternoon (October 9) if you are interested.

On October 18, Shanti’s participating in the Washington, D.C., Light the Night Walk to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. If you donate any amount, you will be eligible to win a fibery sort of prize.

Noolie’s having a contest – go vote for Clover in the Great American Photo Contest, and you will be entered in a prize drawing for November 1.

We’ve had a few really lovely fall days interspersed with rain and gloom. Although yesterday was gorgeous, I forgot to take my camera along on my walk, so you get to see neither the pictures of the woman walking around Lake of the Isles with a parrot on each shoulder nor the two blue herons wading and then flying across the lake. Instead, we shall look at trees from Saturday’s walk.

Not all of the trees are fully committed to fall yet.

The willows seem pretty united in not believing it’s fall.

While the maples tend to be the most into the spirit of the season…

…but not always, as illustrated by this line of three maples.

Sometimes even individual trees can’t decide.

“Y’know, Mom, no one really wants to look at trees. I’m sure your readers would much rather look at pictures of tasty parrots.” -Chaos

Racking it up

I’ve mentioned how much I enjoy whimsical bike racks, such as the ones outside of the Uptown Y:

This one’s presumably from the same artist/era and could use some welding.

More recent bike-shaped bike racks…

These have a slightly different style.

And this one departs utterly from that theme!

For ultimate security, try the Metro Transit bike lockers.

And remember…

Fall is definitely on its way – time to change from the crisp, cool cotton sheets to the snuggly jersey sheets.

“Go away! We’re not here!” -Chaos

“Yeah! What the big kitty said!” -Mayhem

Along the banks of the Mississippi

Fortunately, I saw more than bridge bits as I biked along West River Parkway last week.

I saw my old stomping grounds, the University of Minnesota East Bank campus (although I actually spent more time at the St. Paul campus) in the distance. Ah, flashbacks to walking across the Washington Avenue Bridge (on the left) in the bitter winter winds between the U of MN East and West Bank campuses… True, there’s an enclosed (but unheated) portion of the bridge, but it tended to smell rather vile…

Trying to make sense of the shape in the middle of that picture? You probably won’t be able to – it’s the Weisman Art Museum. Nope, it wasn’t designed by Escher. 😉

Earlier this summer, someone emailed me, hoping that I wasn’t affected too much by the flooding along the Mississippi. Not at all! The Mississippi River runs through a gorge for much of its journey through the Twin Cities. If we have flooding? Not going to be much left downstream…

While the Mississippi River Gorge isn’t much compared to, say, the Grand Canyon, it is very lovely and green in the summer – a sinuous oasis through the heart of the Cities.

Can you see the wee waterfall?

Posting to the past

I always enjoy anachronisms, such as this very simple metal hitching post…

…and this slightly fancier wood and metal post…

…and especially this very fancy metal post!

“You better not be thinking about kitty hitching posts, Mom! The big kitty and I will not stand for that sort of shenanigan, not even if the posts have cool feather toys on them.” -Mayhem
