I went for a lovely walk around Lake of the Isles last Thursday evening – it was sunny and +50F!
Can you see the pickup truck on the ice?! Intellectually, I know the ice was still pretty thick – but with water pooling on top of the ice, driving around on the lake sure didn’t seem like a smart thing to do.
There were some guys fishing and hanging out on the lake, too.
Apparently nobody read the signs first… (Thanks to Brigitte for mentioning this story about one of these handy dandy red boards being used to save some people who fell through the ice on Lake Harriet on Sunday!)
Although, considering how bad the potholes were on Lake of the Isles Parkway, maybe the lake was the best choice! 🙂
“Wait, go back to that last picture a minute – is that a duckling crossing sign? Can you bring us back some ducklings next time you go to the lake, Mom? May and I will take good care of them, promise.” -Chaos
You people up North are too weird. It’s bad enough fishing in good weather!
Poor Chaosal unit!
Walking in nice weather. That seems vaguely familiar.
Which keens were those?!
And by “good care” he means “oh look.. Ducklings.. nom nom nom.” lol.
These are the jerks that fall through and our taxes pay for them to be rescued. WHAT were they thinking? Oh, that assumed they had brains to think with…
It’s really looking like spring in your neighborhood!
I’m ready for Florida next week in the worst way. Rubbing it in? Nah?
I saw something on the news (but the sound was off) about a lake rescue on the ice in Minneapolis? Anyhoo, if you’re gonna ice fish…at least make sure it can hold you!
Aren’t the potholes *insane*? I’m sure anyone with half the snow we’ve received is dealing with the same thing.
Ah, the joys of ice fishing, an activity I’ve never understood.
That pothole is scary! I attended Como Elementary and duckling crossings were big events in the springtime. : )
lol, Chaos, yer a naughty kitty.
Don’t you love potholes like that? When you hit them it’s like having all of your internal organs rearranged. I swear, there was a Dodge neon stuck in the bottom of one we saw last week.
We live around lots of water and it always surprises me when I see people out on the ice. People around here like to get their 4×4’s and dirtbikes and ride donuts around the ice and laps up and down. People ice fish and skate on it too. It just totally freaks me out.
When I was in High School my dad used to take our old ’66 Dodge Monaco out to Lake Minnetonka to go ice fishing – he went out early one morning on a day like last Thursday (melt early – cold later). He fished all day – when it got to be time to go home (dusk), the car had sunken 6-8 inches into the lake and then re-frozen. He couldn’t get the car off of the lake! (Then later that night a bunch of snowmobilers came out and spray painted the white/black car with bright orange graffiti! Heh – dad was crabby.
Chaos- I’m sure Chris doesn’t want ducky doo in her house.
I think ice-fishing is a predominantly male thing. Need I say more?
Sure Chaos. I’m sure you’ll take good card of ducklings. You silly kitty.
Of course, you would, buddy. You’d have them well taken care of in a delicate cream sauce!
Duckling a la ‘Nip!
Driving on ice in 50 degree weather?! I’d bet dollars to donuts that a man was doing the driving. Scary pot holes. Chaos, duckies get BIG.
duck is delicious
I always have a hard time feeling sorry for people who fall through the ice this time of year. They KNOW it’s March.
We might get sunny and 50F today too! I hope I hope I hope.
Quite a lovely set of potholes! One could lose an axle.
I hope your snow melts soon. In my hometown in Wisconsin, there is a sturgeon spearing season, where the guys cut a big hole in the ice, then lay next to the hole hoping to spear a sturgeon. Crazy.
I think Chaos is perpetrating some obfuscation about his “care” of the ducklings.
Yeah, it didn’t snow here in Michigan last night, either.
And we NEVER have potholes. (eyeroll)
Nice Keens. If this were flickr I’d be inviting you to join the Keen Shoes group and put your photo there. 😀
I’m just lovin’ spring. aren’t you?
I think this is the first year that people from my home town have not been regular features on the nightly news following the headline “Another fisherman/snowmobiler/truck has fallen through the ice on *”
Either all the dumb ones have fallen through & learned their lesson (highly unlikely), the news isn’t following the fall-throughs (also highly unlikely) OR the ice is still kinda okay. I expect to see former classmates become featured stories any day now.
More snow? I am so sorry…and here I am whining just because it’s cold. Chaos, what are you going to do with frozen ducks? Or should I not ask?
Snow! We hear that there might be a freak snowstorm over Easter here but I think it is unlikely 🙂 I love those photos from your walk – next time we visit we definitely want to go walking 🙂
I guess you don’t want to hear that it’s in the 70s here today. 😉 Actually this is our freaky weather month too. I bet Chaos and May would take really good care of a duckling.
It always amazes me the driving trucks on ice here in the contigious 48 states. Doesn’t seem like a good idea with global warming.
I wonder when the are going to start fixing the roads. They are all horrible!!!
Chaos, it looks like your Mom has one of those charcoal colored flat scratch scratch pads like our Mom has!!! Though she won’t let us use it cause she says its for blocking. No fair, no fun.
~Rufus and Ruby~
p.s. Mom says nice shoes in pic 1.
With a plea like that…how can you resist??
maybe I am a scaredy cat, but when the ie stats to thaw, I stay off it1 Actually, I stay off it all the time, but if it’s thawing, the thickness can be unpredictable according to my ice-fishing friends. Talk about foolhardy. which also applies to bringing home baby chicks, Chaos!
