Well, crap. I guess I’ll have to break out a recipe.

Yes, my project on my other notebook computer continues. I got an official backup (a very unimpressive 22 hours to backup 125 gb – ack!) and am in the process of doing some simple “copy all of the good stuff on to the portable hard drive for redundancy and simplicity.” Theoretically simple, at least. At one point, Vista 64 informed me that it would take 38,000 days to copy 50 gb. *blink blink* Um… Iz hatez Vista. And if there were drivers for virtually any other OS for that notebook, I’d probably be test driving a new OS right now. Anyway. Wish me luck, since I’ll soon (hopefully) be reinstalling Vista 64 to see if that improves things. I’ve seen the BSOD more times in the past month than in my life prior to using Vista 64.

Onward! Here’s one of my gluten-free recipes that I haven’t posted before. Mmmm… snickerdoodles…

Snickerdoodles
1 c butter
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 c sugar
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp xanthan gum
1/2 tsp salt
2 3/4 c GF flour mix (I used 1/4 c tapioca flour, 1 1/4 c sweet rice flour, and 1 1/4 c rice flour at the time, but Bob’s Red Mill GF Flour Blend would probably work well)

Beat together butter, sugar, and eggs. Stir dry ingredients together and slowly add to butter mixture. Chill dough. Roll into walnut-sized balls, then roll in a mixture of 2 T sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon. Place 2″ apart on parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F until barely browned but still soft, approximately 10-12 minutes.

Let’s see what I have in my uploaded but not used photo folder. *sound of rummaging* How about some scenery pictures from mid-October?

Ah, a lovely guardian fruit basket, protecting the inhabitants from… scurvy?

I’m fond of this house and its boulder scaping. Personally, I think they should just have eliminated the grass entirely and gone with a boulder field.

Whoops – some Halloween decoration pictures I forgot to post…

Here’s a detail from the house above. Embiggen for full effect!

*more rummaging* Aw, look at Mayhem enjoying the sun back in… September 2007.

  1. Yay! Someone else who hates Vista. ~5 years with XP and not once did I get the BSOD.

Poor May! Maybe your Mum will one day, take you out in the “real” sunshine 😉

  2. Hmmmm… I never ever have had the BSOD with Vista, but with XP my puter crashed every 3.76 seconds… Now, don’t get me wrong, I do NOT like Vista, but on my puter it runs better than XP.

Do you use a particular software to a back up of your puter? I have a 500 GB external hard drive that came with a non-functional 1-step back up software. Even when I upgraded to the paid version it didn’t work as is kept using the broken version and I can’t remove the broken version from my HD… so to make this short and sassy, is there a good back up-ing software out there? Oh and I don’t think I can miss my puter for 22 hours…

  3. Mmmm, snickerdoodles sound wonderful! Guess what I may try out this weekend?!

So, um. Would it be worth your while to blow out your harddrive, and reinstall (or install) XP?

  4. I agree with Mayhem on that one. Sorry to hear your computer is being so uncooperative. (If it makes you feel better, the backup I have going at work often takes a couple of days to do the “recycle” version. But at least the tied-up computer is purely for backup…)

  5. Dave has always wanted to get two lions for the end of our driveway, on either side. He has a penchant for things that I think are somewhat gaudy if not used in the proper setting; large stone driveway lions is one example. But I think I would feel quite comfortable with putting big bunches of fruit at either end of my driveway, oh yes.

That’s a great picture of Mayhem – I love it when cats arch their backs like that. It’s such a classic Hallowe’en image to me.

    (How are you feeling today?)

  6. Until Micro$oft comes up with something better than Vista, I’m holding on to my old computer with XP since it actually works. If they don’t, I’m going Mac and won’t look back.

By the way, love the pic of sunshine May!

  7. Puck’s new laptop has Vista – so far the only version in our house (that’s how old all our ‘puters are!) My old Sony is chugging along and I live in fear that it will die on me.

  8. I hate Vista, but luckily I only have to use it at work, which means when it’s flaky, it’s someone else’s problem! (And I find the 100-year backup very amusing — you could carve all your data onto stone tablets in that time…)

  9. Microsoft has never been very good at that time estimation thing. I haven’t heard much good about Vista 64. We’ve been telling our customers that they have until the end of the year to get a computer with XP on it if they plan on getting a new one. Otherwise they’re stuck with Vista, and so are we when problems crop up.

I like that boulder-scaped house and the pic of May.

  10. One hundred and four years for a backup, huh? Wow, that’s…special.

The one that always drives me crazy is defragging my hard drive and watching the “percent complete” bar sit at 5% for 20 minutes. I don’t think that “percent complete” means what Microsoft thinks it means.

  11. I hope your computer woes end soon happily. Even though my MacBook Pro is on its third battery (under warranty), Time Machine makes it worth it.

May is so pretty in the sunshine. I love how cats will follow the sun around the house.

  12. 38,000 days? That seems like a lot!

I will say that Vista and I are mostly getting along … though there are some XP things that I still miss!

  13. The only reason my hubby hasn’t switched us to Mac (he is the IT dept in my household) is that then you are acaptive audience for all the stuff…..

  14. Snickerdoodles sound very nice.

Vista is so awful that I have people begging me to put XP back on their machines. 38,000 days – wow that is a long backup.

  15. oooh! great ghoul chasing bat ghouls! give me halloween pics and black cat pics all year round and i am a happy camper.

good luck with the puter woes. sounds very messy.

i had to laugh at spouse recently b/c he told me he wanted to see “Mojave.” i said “um, that’s a new ad campaign for Vista.” gotcha! lol

he was lucky b/c when he bought his new PC last year the place that put it together gave him a choice btw Vista and XP. so he has XP … whew…

  16. oh…and p.s. I am the inveterate Mac user in our house. spouse makes fun of me *constantly*

    hehhehheh

i’ve always used PCs at work, but always had an Apple at home and have only owned a total of *three* Macs since 1990. believe it or not i’ve gotten that much mileage out of them…an average lifespan of about six years (and counting) per machine. i’m just sayin.

  17. I learned at the tax conference this week that official support, i.e., from Microsoft, ends in 6 months. Sure hope they get Vista working by then…

    ::pats her Mac Mini fondly::

  18. I am even more glad now to have sprung for a Mac last time around. Best of luck with the puter!

And I agree with you – that boulder-scaping is lovely. Though I like the grass as an accent to the boulders. Makes the stone stand out more.
