Project Spectrum craftiness (with even less knitting than ever!)

The Craft Modster posted a very inspiring entry about t-shirt stenciling a few days ago and got me all excited to try stenciling some onesies for my friends’ baby. (You remember the fate of the onesies, right?) I definitely need to try something else for the lettering, but I’m pretty pleased with my first effort, made with emerald green Jacquard fabric paint. The owl is a stamp that my dad sells (it’s on the Rango Zoo 3 sheet).

I also tie-dyed several onesies, since the parents are tie-dye fanatics. I used dark green Rit dye. The onesie on the left (slightly obscured in this picture) had rubber bands around it in three places. The onesie on the right (also slightly obscured in this picture) was simply tied in a big knot. I like the big knot effect much better!

“If I sit on them, she won’t be tempted to put them on me, right?”

“Oh, well that sort of ‘putting on’ isn’t so bad, I guess.”

“Duuuuuuuude, I could sure use a hit of catnip and some tuna. Must be the tie dyes.”

  1. Oh, Chris, the onesies look great! I just love the “genius” one — my grandmother, my mom’s mother, loved owls. Like, *loved* them. She was quite a good painter and she painted herself a lot of owls. I have a few owl figurines that were hers; every time I see an owl I think of her. The owl print on the onesie you made looks remarkably like an owl figurine I have that was hers. I thought of her as soon as I saw the onesie. Tell your dad I love the stamp (something my mom used to collect — stamps!). I love the onesie — it’s great!

  2. have you thought about tying the rubber bands in random spots, for sort of a starburst effect??

    fun project 🙂

  3. dude, I’m bookmarking this for future reference. Thanks for linking to the crafty modster article, too. I was just looking at my assortment of solid tee’s thinking they need a little jazzing up.

    Love the kitty captions, too!

  4. Chaos is VERY lucky not to be living in this house. Those onsies would have been on him in a heartbeat with Kate around!!

  5. Wonderful projects! You reallly have a knack for dyeing :o) and I like the owl stamp! Where did you do your RIT dyeing? In the tub, the washer, on the kitchen table? I’ve been thinking about that but we rent and it has been so messy in the past (maybe that’s just me..hmm)

Great pictures of Chaos – he really does look like he is thinking about tuna in that last pic – tongue to the nose and all.

  6. Very clever idea with the onsies 🙂 Especially for a summer baby. Maybe Chaos will quit sitting on them if you put him through the indignity of wearing one 😉

  7. adorable!
we love making t-shirts too, even the 3-year-old has made t-shirts for grow-nups (with a tiny bit of help)…your owl print reminds me of the French Le Bestiaire ou Cortege d’Orphee. Artist: Raoul Dufy

  8. what fun! I haven’t done tie-dye in ages! The owl and the “genius” are great as well. Your friends will love them.
And golly, Chaos sure seems to be having fun also!

  9. Chris…..I love rubber stamping….and ballroom……..and oh my goodness…the bottom picture of your dad’s ballroom pictures is of Jay Larson…..my old dance partner in San Jose. Jay tried to convince me to move to Minnesota over ten years ago so that our latin partnership wouldn’t break up. I didn’t. Who knew I’d end up here anyhow years later. Okay, so am I sharing way too much now.

    Great job on the one-sies.

  10. OMG! I so didn’t know you were connected to Red Castle! Several years ago I did some class teaching on the “big” rubberstamp list and used some of your dad’s stamps. Such a small, small world! Wow!

  11. So cute! I like the font for the Genius design. Clean, crisp, and perfectly matched for what it’s saying. Probably not so much if it said Cutie or something like that, but that wouldn’t be very original anyways.

  12. I love the owl design! I was inspired by Anjo’s post too… maybe I can fit it in next month, because I really wanna try this! Love the tie-dye ones too. Green is so great 😉

  13. I love doing custom onesies as baby gifts. I’ve always been lazy and used iron-on transfers, but yours looks much artsier and more stylish. So cute!

  14. Okay…the stencils and owl turned out perfect. Super cool! But those tiny teeny green tie-dyes…well, those all-out rock! Love them all! Lucky baby. Luckyluckylucky…
